I consider myself to be a socially conscious person, and I love that I can use that in my work as a therapist in a social service agency. (Though I hate that my employer is a for-profit org.) I am a Christian, but I consider myself to be a liberation theologian, and probably align myself more with the likes of Dorothy Day and Shane Claiborne than someone like TD Jakes and Joel Osteen. I wish I was more of an active-activist, but have found it difficult to organize my time (pun intended). Still, I hold to the values and ideals that I developed in my activist hey-day (i.e. early college years), and I feel that this has framed me, both personally and professionally.

Honestly, I'm tired of going on dating sites trying to find someone whose values match mine. I hate finding someone who seems close to ideal, and then I read the answers to the questions... Racist jokes are funny? Nope. Women have an obligation to shave their legs? Nope. Men can't wear makeup? Nope. People with lower IQs shouldn't procreate? Nope. It's not just the big issues I care about, but it's the little things that can really add up. I want to find someone who thinks critically about the world around them. And not necessarily so we can talk about the social injustices of the world for hours on end (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), but mostly because I feel that if I know that my partner and I are largely on the same page about social issues and how to create social change, then it leaves room to talk about other things...like what to watch next on Netflix and whose turn it is to take the garbage out. See? Important stuff! *wink*
