Active activist describes "why" it is important... When I was growing up I vowed to change the world, and before I became a teenager I began to study Civil Rights Law. To change the world around us one needs to be able to change the fiber of society, which is the law. And if one has one or more disabilities, as I do and did, to change things for the better was everything to me.

To have had a close friend pass without being able to help and while watching everyone else unable to do anything was a pwerful incentive to continue, and the civil rights law for people with disabilities is what resulted. Yes, I co-conceived and co-named the civil rights law for Americans with disabilities, and far more.

But there is a difference between in-your-face activism and effective activism. The real work goes on behind closed doors, just like politics, but the presence of so many others outside the doors is what helps to get them open in the first place.

I've accomplished far more, and am now semi-retired. I'd like to live out my days with you if you're ready and possibly interested. Do you know where the essence of the idea for the ADA came from?
